The New Way To Curl Your Hair

My favorite curls right now: soft, easy, and last for days

Different but Better

If you learned how to curl your hair back when  MTV played music videos, it’s time to change your technique! During that time, we would take sections of hair, spray them with hairspray, clamp the burning hot curling iron at the ends and roll up. Then we’d hold, spray, pull the iron out and spray some more. You remember we did NOT brush out those sausage curls, right? Unless it was to tease to within and inch of your life, you didn’t touch those curls.

Now, we want to create a balanced style, where you have some lift at the scalp area, nice voluminous waves throughout, with softly finished ends. In short, it is exactly the opposite result than we used to try for, which requires a very different technique. It can be an uncomfortable transition to master a new curling routine, but it will be so worth it!

Tools of the Trade

The techniques are a bit different for today’s styles, and so are our tools. The curling irons now have special coatings and heating elements so you have even heat that lasts while you curl—no more uncontrolled frying or hot spots. When used properly, I’ve found that styling with today’s irons actually helps the hair look and feel smoother, and allows for longer lasting results.

We can use some hairspray to hold our finished style, but usually we prefer working with a dry texture spray for some soft grip. Another big difference is that we always relax the curls after they’ve cooled, using our fingers, a wide-toothed comb, or a brush, It all depends on the overall curl result we want.

Mama’s Little Secret

The real key to having a beautiful, full, lasting curl is having great hair to begin with. Easy, right? If you’re anything like me, you’ve noticed some changes in your texture and density over the years, and it is not the same hair that we curled back then. For me, I’ve had autoimmune issues and hormonal shifts, creating fine, limp hair that doesn’t hold a curl at all! That is why I wear NBR® Extensions—I get to have the hair I’ve always wanted, it holds my style for days, and my natural hair is protected from over styling and can actually get healthy and long!

Watch, Learn, Practice

The biggest frustration when trying something new, even if it’s something we’ve done for years like curling our hair, is the fact that it’s never as easy as it looks. You need repetition to build muscle memory, and that will take some time and practice. I’ve created a video showing exactly how I create these curls! Once you watch the process, grab your tools and get to work! If you need to watch it a couple of times before you get it right, that’s perfectly fine—like I said, it’s never as easy as we think it will be! Here is the link for my tutorial.

I hope you’re excited about creating these ‘new curls.” If you try them and still feel like you need better hair, you can learn about Strands Salon and NBR® Extensions here. As always, let me know if you have any questions!
